Rock Music — Summary & Assessment
Goals · Methodology · Rating
Let us draw conclusions. The goals of this site can be defined as follows:
- Identifying the most significant figures in the history of rock music.
- Rating these figures — bands, albums, songs, people — using a consistent system.
- Classifying them by genre, era, and artistic significance.
What is Classic Rock?
The term "Classic Rock" or "Rock Classics" is on one hand easy to define — on the other hand, definitions in art are always vague and heavily coloured by subjective taste. The term "Classic Rock" was coined in 1981 by the American radio station WYSP.
The chronological starting point of this era is the legendary band The Beatles, who fulfil all key criteria for Classic Rock: band format, groundbreaking albums, unforgettable songs. It is of course undisputed that Queen, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd have entered musical history as true classics — just as Mozart, Bach, and Tchaikovsky have in the world of classical music.
Rating System
All entries on this site are rated on a scale from 0 to 10, divided into two dimensions:
- Main Rating — overall musical quality, influence, and significance.
- Art Rating — artistic ambition, originality, and complexity.
This separation makes it possible to distinguish popular, accessible music from experimental and more demanding art — without devaluing either.
Genres
We distinguish four main genres that form the basis of all classifications:
- Rock — the core: Classic Rock, Blues Rock, Rock'n'Roll.
- Hard Rock — harder styles, more intense energy.
- Art Rock — Symphonic, Prog, Jazz Rock, experimental forms.
- By Rock — borderline styles: Glam, Punk, Pop-Rock, Folk.
Conclusion
"True rock is dead" — we consider this thesis to be essentially correct. The golden age of classic rock stretched from approximately 1963 to 1995. What came after was evolution, quotation, or nostalgia — but rarely genuine innovation at the level of the golden era.
This website is an attempt to document, organise, and make this era accessible to music lovers of all generations.
